Investors may buy gold for a variety of reasons: among them include a desire to diversify their assets; to hide wealth from tax authorities; for reasons of political belief (e.g. libertarian); or out of fear of an economic depression or other serious crisis (e.g. gold bug).

From 1878 through 1957, the US issued Silver Certificates, most of which looked similar to current US paper money. These were backed by silver. In a similar manner, Gold Certificates were issued from 1863 to 1922 and were backed by real gold.

For the new collector, satiny luster is more difficult to understand and appreciate than frosty luster. This is due to the fact that it is more subtle in its appearance. As an example, the luster on the coin shown above is excellent in-hand and shows very few breaks in the fields. But most collectors would think this coin has a considerable amount of wear; due to its subtle luster and, obviously, the weakness of strike at the centers.

Let's look at the doomsday scenario of investing. Many investors, myself included, hold gold because it is a great store of value. If our economy ever goes under (I sure hope it doesn't), gold and silver coins will be used to pay for goods and services. I sure want to hold different denominations and types of coins because not all goods and services cost the same amount. The smaller 1/10 ounce gold coins are the best for this scenario because they can be used to pay for smaller purchases. Silver coins are also really important under this scenario.

When collecting paper money, always try to collect uncirculated notes if they are current issues. In many cases, a note that is in less than uncirculated condition will never be worth more than face value. The colors are usually more vibrant on an uncirculated note and the artwork is frequently more 'crisp' and easier to discern. Of course older notes can often only be found in various degrees of circulated condition. In this case, only buy notes which are visually pleasing.

Barack Obama Coins

Thu, 20 Nov 2008 04:52:00 +0000
Well, I knew it wouldn't be long before someone would cash in on Barack Obama's success and release coins with his likeness on them.

When a similar thing happened after 9/11, I wrote a not so kind article (Link) about one of those coins being promoted. Besides cashing in on 9/11, the coin also emphasized that it was "clad in 24kt gold." In the article I wrote, I went through the math to show that the coin they were selling for $29.95 contained a whopping 39 cents worth of gold.

The whole business felt so morally wrong to me that I would actually feel the anger rise in me each time I saw one of the commercials. Now it's Barack Obama's turn to be on those type of coins.

So what do I think this time as I hear about Barack being "layered in 24kt gold? If your buying it because you think the coin looks pretty, then go ahead and buy one. If you are buying it because you think the gold content will give the coin value, then get out the calculator and read my other article before you buy.

But if after all that, you still want a Barack Obama keepsake to remember what is obviously a historic time for our country - whether you voted for him or not - then here is a list of links to some of the coins and other collectibles that I have seen so far. This list is just a small sample of what is out there.
